TCU women’s basketball coach Mark Campbell picked up his 100th career win as the No. 10-ranked Horned Frogs rolled to a 93-57 blowout of Texas-Rio Grande Valley on Sunday in the Maggie Dixon Classic at Schollmaier Arena.
Olivia Miles and Marta Suarez continued to look like one of the nation’s most dynamic duos as they combined for 46 points.
The Horned Frogs (6-0) started the game on an 18-0 run as Suarez knocked down back-to-back 3s to jump-start the surge. Suarez hit three of her six 3s in the first quarter as TCU held a 30-13 lead.
UTRGV (3-3) made things interesting in the second quarter, cutting the Horned Frogs’ lead to 39-33 with 3:09 remaining before halftime.
That’s when Miles took over and showed why she’s projected to be a top-five pick in the upcoming WNBA draft. She went on a personal 7-0 run to close the quarter with TCU ahead 46-33.
The VIpers made one last push in the third as they cut another double-digit deficit to 55-46 with 5:13 remaining in the quarter. But Suarez took over during a 14-0 run with seven straight points, showcasing her versatile offensive skill set as the Horned Frogs held a 23-point lead entering the fourth.
The win over UTRGV also extended TCU’s home winning streak to 29 games.
Suarez finished with 24 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, and Miles had 22 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
The Horned Frogs will now travel to Mexico for the Cancun Challenge over Thanksgiving. TCU faces Richmond (5-1) at 8 p.m. Thursday and UAB (2-3) at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
