Former TCU tennis player takes down world’s No. 1-ranked Carlos Alcaraz in Paris
Former TCU tennis star Cameron Norrie picked up what he called the best win of his career Tuesday, beating the world’s No. 1-ranked player, Carlos Alcaraz, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the Paris Masters.
Norrie, who is ranked 31st and peaked at No. 8 in 2022, scored his first victory against a player ranked No. 1. He improved to 3-5 all-time against Alcaraz, who defeated Norrie in the Wimbledon quarterfinals in July.
“Massive, so big for me,” Norrie told reporters. “I have just tried to enjoy my tennis in the second half of the year and I was able to do that and to get a win like this, the biggest of my career.”
It was the first time Alcaraz, a six-time major champion, had lost before a final since falling 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 to David Goffin in the round of 64 at the Miami Open in March.
Norrie, of Great Britain, dominated while playing for TCU from 2014-17, becoming the first player in program history to be ranked No. 1 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles poll. He won Big 12 player of the year and was an All-American in 2017.
Norrie will play the winner of the match between Arthur Rinderknech and Valentin Vacherot in the round of 16.
