TCU baseball eliminated from NCAA regional tournament, falling to Oregon State

The TCU baseball season had a rough ending.

Seven runs through the first three innings proved to be all Oregon State needed to stay alive and end the Horned Frogs’ season on Saturday in the Corvallis Regional, 7-2.

One day after both teams lost their regional openers, the two highest seeds needed a win to stay alive.

After losing the regional opener to USC 13-1 on Friday, the Horned Frogs needed to turn a complete 180.

TCU head coach Kirk Sarloos and Beavers head coach Mitch Canham turned to freshman starters in a must-win game.

Only one delivered.

Oregon State’s Dax Whitney hadn’t made an appearance since May 16, but came out the gate with three-straight strikeouts to begin the game. He tied his career-high of six innings, allowing just two earned runs while striking out 12.

The Beaver’s lineup jumped all over TCU’s Mason Brassfield early. In the bottom half of the first, a one-out double by Aiva Arquette and a walk set up catcher Wilson Weber’s 11th home run of the season for an early 3-0 lead.

TCU’s Mason Brassfield failed to make it out of the second inning after a lead off homer by Trent Caraway extended Oregon State’s lead to four and a full-count walk to start the inning. Reliever Braeden Sloan got out of the frame after a hit batter and a walk with the strikeout to end the inning.

Oregon State continued to pile on the runs in the third, with another home run to begin the inning off the bat of AJ Singer and a two-run shot by Tyce Peterson to blow the game open and give the Beavers a 7-0 lead.

TCU’s offense continued to struggle in this game. In total, they struck out a combined 23 times in both games.

The Horned Frog struggles to put the lead-off man on also continued. They managed to do so once during the entire game in the fifth, where an Anthony Silva double set up a two-run shot for Isaac Cadena to cut OSU’s lead to five.

Sloan managed to keep the Beavers for the next four innings, but the damage was done. Things began to get chippy in the bottom half of the fifth after OSU’s Trent Caraway stared Sloan down after drawing a two-out walk.

The Horned Frogs managed to put runners on in the final three innings of the game but could not cash in.

Oregon State will face the loser of USC and Saint Mary’s in a must-win game Sunday afternoon.

TCU finishes its season with a 39-20 record.
