Slumping TCU men lose regular-season finale at Colorado
TCU continued its last season slump with a disappointing 76-56 defeat in the regular season finale at Colorado.
Less than three weeks ago, the Horned Frogs were on a hot streak and played their way onto the NCAA Tournament bubble. Now TCU will need to win the BIg 12 Tournament, after dropping four of the final five games of the regular season a and upsetting Texas Tech on Feb. 19.
The two teams will now meet in the opening round of the Big 12 tournament on Tuesday in Kansas City. The Horned Frogs (16-15 overall, 9-11 in Big 12) are the No. 9 seed in the tournament. Colorado, despite the win, remains in last place and is the No. 16 seed. Tip off is at 2 p.m.
The Buffaloes scored the first five points of the game and remained in control throughout much of the game, leading 37-31 at halftime and holding a 39-24 edge in the second half.
Despite the slow start in each half, the Horned Frogs cut Colorado’s lead to 51-50 as Trazarien White and freshman forward Micah Robinson led an 11-0 run. But the comeback was short-lived as TCU’s offense couldn’t keep pace with the Buffaloes.
Colorado ripped off an 11-0 run to pull away from the Horned Frogs and TCU had just one field goal in the final seven minutes of the game.
Trazarien White led the Horned Frogs with a season-high 21 points while Noah Reynolds added 12.
Julian Hammond III led the Buffaloes with 19 points.
The Horned Frogs made just 31.6% of their field goals (18 of 67) while the Buffaloes made 45.6% (26 of 57). The Buffs had a commanding 45-28 rebounding edge.
The story of TCU’s regular season can be summed up by one question: Where did the Horned Frogs play? At Schollmaier Arena, TCU had one of the best home courts in the conference with a 14-3 record, but the Horned Frogs were just 2-12 in away and neutral site games.
It’s a stat that doesn’t bode well for TCU’s chances in Kansas City without its home crowd behind it.
