No. 10 TCU women’s basketball handles business on the road at Arizona State
Behind a fourth quarter outburst by Madison Conner, No. 10 TCU picked up its second straight road win with a 82-66 victory over Arizona State Wednesday night.
Despite the Sun Devils (8-19, 2-13) place at the bottom of the Big 12 standings, it was still an important loss as the Horned Frogs (25-3, 13-2) remained in the hunt for the Big 12 regular season title.
After leading by as many as 17 in the third quarter, TCU allowed the Sun Devils to make a run in the fourth as Arizona State cut the Horned Frogs’ lead to 71-62 with 5:18 remaining. Conner slammed the door shut on any last second comeback as she knocked down four shots in a row to bury the Sun Devils.
Conner outscored Arizona State 11-4 in the final seconds as she shook off a slow start in the first half. Conner scored 22 in the second half after going scoreless in the first two quarters.
All five starters scored in double figures including Sedona Prince’s 17 points and nine rebounds. The Horned Frogs’ depth was key in avoiding an upset with Conner and Hailey Van Lith going a combined 2-of-12 in the first half.
Donovyn Hunter picked up the scoring slack with 10 first half points as she made all four of her attempts. Hunter was inserted into the starting lineup in place of Taylor Bigby and immediately provided a boost as TCU led Arizona State 42-35 at halftime. Agnes Emma-Nnopu also played a key role in the first as she scored eight points and knocked down two big 3s to spark the offense.
When the second half began the Horned Frogs’ big three of Prince, Van Lith and Conner began to take over the game. Each scored a basket to start the half as TCU increased its lead to 48-37.
Then Conner started to get hot as she knocked down two more jumpers to increase the lead to 53-39. Conner scored 11 points in the period as TCU led by as many as 17.
TCU remained tied in first place with Baylor (23-5, 13-2) as the Bears defeated Colorado Wednesday. The two rivals will meet again in Waco on March 2 in a game that could decide the league. The Horned Frogs defeated Baylor 80-75 on Jan. 26.
The Horned Frogs’ next game will be against No. 17 West Virginia at Schollmaier Arena at 11 a.m. Sunday.
