TCU women’s basketball falls at Oklahoma State in first Big 12 defeat of season
TCU women’s basketball undefeated start in Big 12 play came to a surprising halt to Oklahoma State on Wednesday night in Stillwater.
Despite leading by as many as 15 points in the third quarter, the Horned Frogs fell 60-59 to the Cowgirls after being outscored 20-11 in the fourth quarter.
After Oklahoma State cut it to five, Hailey Van Lith responded with a jumper that gave TCU a 55-48 lead with just 2:52 remaining. Oklahoma State then exploded for a 12-0 run in a span of two minutes to stun TCU and take the lead.
Despite the run TCU had a chance to win it at the end. Sedona Prince split her two free throw attempts to cut it to four and then Madison Conner was fouled while shooting a 3-pointer and she made all three to cut Oklahoma State’s lead to 60-59.
Van Lith had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but her jump shot fell short. Prince finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds while Van Lith added 12 points and eight assists.
In the grand scheme of things it’s not a horrible loss for TCU (19-2, 9-1) as Oklahoma State was just ranked in the top-25 and should be a NCAA Tournament team.
A bigger concern that is emerging is TCU’s inability to maintain large leads in the second half. This is the third straight game where TCU has seen an opponent overcome a double digit deficit late in the second half.
The Horned Frogs led by as many as 21 points against UCF on Jan. 14, but the Knights cut it to six at one point and only lost 90-81. Against Utah, the Horned Frogs led by as many as 14, but the Utes were able to cut it to five before eventually falling 81-73.
Once is an outlier, twice is a coincidence, but after three times it now has to become a concern for a TCU team that has aspirations of advancing to the second week of the NCAA Tournament and beyond.
The Horned Frogs will have a chance to get another signature win on Sunday against No. 25 Baylor.
