Recruiting update: Sonny Dykes anticipates another top-20 class for TCU football program

While the regular season isn’t finished just yet, that didn’t stop TCU coach Sonny Dykes from looking ahead to what he anticipates will be a busy recruiting season over the next few months.

On Sunday the Horned Frogs landed a massive commitment Carrollton Ranchview receiver Terry Shelton. Shelton, a former Arizona commitment, is the highest-ranked recruit in TCU’s 2025 recruiting class.

TCU’s class is currently ranked No. 22 in the country and No. 1 in the Big 12 according to 247Sports and Dykes anticipates the Horned Frogs will add to the class of 25 commitments over the next few weeks.

“We’re going to have an opportunity to close strong with three or four guys,” Dykes said Tuesday. “I think we’re going to need to close with them from a recruiting standpoint. That’s our hope at least. We said it over and over again that this is the type of place where we should have a top-20 recruiting class every year.

“I think we’re going to end up with that this year and we feel like we should. That’s the minimum for us to recruit at that level.”

One name to watch in that regard could be North Crowley receiver Quentin Gibson. The senior receiver has had a breakout season and ranks among the best receivers in the state production wise.

The Horned Frogs are listed as one of his top options along with Colorado on 247Sports. He’s also coveted by the staff and has been made a priority over the last few months.

The receiver position will be one that the Horned Frogs focus on both in recruiting and the transfer portal with Savion Williams, JP Richardson and Jack Bech all out of eligibility.

TCU currently has three receivers committed with Shelton, four-star receiver Ed Small and three-star receiver Dane Jones. Dykes anticipates they’ll target more experienced receivers in the portal as well with a strong recruiting pitch.

“We’re going to need to go out and sign some good players, particularly at wide receiver,” Dykes said. “They’re going to come to some place where they’ll have an opportunity to be a 1,000-yard receiver and the opportunity to play with one of the best quarterbacks in college football.

“You’re going to have an opportunity to play with an offensive line that’s going to have a ton of experience coming back. I think we’ll attract some really good players that want to put up good numbers, have a chance to win games and compete for a conference championship.”

Another name to know is junior college defensive tackle Perry Cole. TCU made Cole’s final four earlier this week and Cole is expected to be in town this weekend when the Horned Frogs face the Wildcats.

Cole is rated the No. 15 JUCO prospect nationally and the No. 8 defensive linemen according to 247Sports.
