Dallas Jesuit alum Max Abmas makes history in Texas Longhorns 77-66 victory over TCU

Max Abmas came up huge down the stretch for the Texas Longhorns in the team’s 77-66 victory over the TCU Horned Frogs on Saturday at Schollmaier Arena.

Abmas scored 13 of his 21 points in the final three and a half minutes, outscoring TCU 13-2. The Longhorn senior also made history when he passed Kansas great Danny Manning (2,951) for 13th all-time on the NCAA Division 1 Men’s Scoring list and ended the game with 2,955 career points.

Longhorns head coach Rodney Terry praised Abmas for passing Manning on the scoring list.

“Max is a special player, special kid on the court, off the court and he passed a great today, he passed Danny Manning. So he’s gonna go down as one of the greatest,” said Terry, “But, love Max and love how he just competes to win.”

Abmas attended Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas before starting his collegiate career at Oral Roberts (2019-22) before transferring to Texas for the 2023 season.

TCU head coach Jaimie Dixon spoke on Abmas late-game shooting heroics.

“Just not being aggressive enough aggressive enough, knowing the situation, that’s on me,” said Dixon.

Despite early-game shooting woes, Abrams said he kept his focus late.

“Just understanding it’s a long game, the first half didn’t make too many shots, also to begin the second,” said Abmas, “I mean, really just staying with it, continuing to make the right play and I was able to get to the free throw line a little bit, kind of get you going and see the ball go in a little bit.”

Teammate Dillon Mitchell said he had faith Abmas would come through late in the game.

“You know, even if he feels like he had a slow game, Max, he’s gonna finish the game, he’s gonna play hard till the buzzer goes off. So it was just about trusting him and that’s always there with our team,” said Mitchell, “I knew when he had that and-1 late in the game...it’s starting to click for him.”
