Former Cowboys star explains what Deion Sanders did in a team meeting before TCU upset
Daryl Johnston appeared on “The Hardline” on The Tickets Sports Radio on Tuesday to discuss several topics, including Deion Sanders’ opening week victory over TCU.
Johnston was in Sanders’ Friday meeting, the day before the Buffaloes shocked the college football world with a win over the Horned Frogs. Johnston explained how Sanders prepared his team to pull off the upset.
Johnston said Sanders gave a brief statement before turning it over to his assistant coaches.
“He [Sanders] had gone around and he told every offensive and defensive coach that they were gonna get up in front of the team, at the team meeting, and tell the team why they were gonna win the game tomorrow.”
Johnston said every coach on the offense and defense gave passionate speeches on why they would win against TCU.
“It was something like I’ve never seen before, it was a non-traditional team meeting,” said Johnston. “I was ready to go play after everybody was done.”
After that moment Johnston said he knew this Colorado team was special.
“I tell you what, there’s something unique about this group right now,” said Johnston, “It’s one thing to talk about it on Friday night and you’re a 20-point underdog and you’re on the road in the stadium of the team played in the national championship game last year. It could just be ... a lot of smoke and mirrors, and then to watch them go out and execute the way that they did was unbelievable.”
