The TCU Horned Frogs received a bit of motivation with Thursday’s release of the 2023 Big 12 media preseason poll.

The defending Big 12 regular-season champions were picked to finish fifth in the conference this season, behind No. 1 Texas, No. 2 Kansas State, No. 3 Oklahoma and No. 4 Texas Tech. The Horned Frogs received three first-place votes.

Last year’s preseason poll wasn’t that high on TCU either. The Horned Frogs were picked seventh and massively exceeded expectations. The Horned Frogs went 13-2 in 2022 with an appearance in the national championship game in Sonny Dykes’ first season

There are fair questions about how TCU replaces so much firepower on offense including replacing offensive coordinator Garrett Riley while teams like Texas and Kansas State return their starting quarterbacks and most of their offensive line.

Oklahoma struggled in the first season under Brent Venables, but the Sooners should have the second most talented roster in the league with a top five recruiting and transfer portal class. But Oklahoma also has question at the skill positions outside of quarterback Dillon Gabriel.

Texas Tech has been a trendy darkhorse pick to potentially make a run to the Big 12 title game, but will the Red Raiders be good enough defensively to live up the billing?

Out of the four new teams to join the Big 12, UCF landed the highest at No. 8 behind No. 6 Baylor and No. 7 Oklahoma State.

The poll:

1. Texas (41), 886

2. Kansas State (14), 858

3. Oklahoma (4), 758

4. Texas Tech (4), 729

5. TCU (3), 727

6. Baylor, 572

7. Oklahoma State (1), 470

8. UCF, 463

9. Kansas, 461

10. Iowa State, 334

11. BYU, 318

12. Houston, 215

13. Cincinnati, 2021

4. West Virginia, 129

First-place votes in parenthesis.
