TCU could join Florida State in exclusive college sports club
The Horned Frogs are two wins away from joining Florida State in an exclusive club to make the championship games in baseball and football.
TCU needs to beat No. 2 Florida twice to advance to the College World Series finals for the first time in program history.
The last time the Frogs matched up against the Gators in the postseason was in 2017. Florida beat TCU en route to its first CWS championship.
The last school to send a football team to the national championship game and send a baseball team to a CWS finals in the same school year was Florida State in the 1998-1999 athletics season.
The Seminoles finished atop the ACC at the end of the 1998 regular season, earning their spot in the national championship game played on Jan 4, 1999. Florida State lost to Tennessee 23-16.
Later that year, the Seminoles would make a run for Omaha, beating Texas A&M, Cal State Fullerton and Stanford twice to advance to the finals.
Florida State dropped this national title, too, losing 6-5 to the University of Miami in Florida.
If TCU makes it to the finals, they’ll still have one-upped the Seminoles because the Frogs made the NCAA basketball tournament, as well. Florida State’s basketball team did not make the tournament in the 1999 season.
However, Florida State did make the tournament in the prior season, where they actually knocked out No. 5 TCU in the opening round.
TCU advanced to the college football championship in January. They lost the title game to Georgia.
