TCU wide receiver Quentin Johnston will be a Los Angeles Charger.

The Chargers selected Johnston with the No. 21 pick of the first round of Thursday night. Johnston was the second receiver taken behind Ohio State’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

Johnston held a draft party in North Dallas during the draft. When asked what Charger fans can expect from him, Johnston said he is looking to leave a positive impact on and off the field.

“They’re going to get an 100% genuine person out of me,” Johnston said. “Down to earth, hard-working, a respectful person. At the end of the day they’re going to get a dog for sure.”

Johnston had his best year under Sonny Dykes with a career-high 60 receptions for 1,069 yards and six touchdowns. Johnston was the MVP of the the Horned Frogs’ Fiesta Bowl victory with six receptions, 163 yards and a touchdown in the College Football Playoff semifinal.

Johnston had three other games with at least 100 yards including 206 yards and the game-winning touchdown in an early season win over Kansas.

The 6-foot-3 receiver has 4.4 speed and will join a loaded receiver room with Mike Williams and Keenan Allen.

Initially before the draft Johnston said it hadn’t hit him yet that he was about to accomplish one of his lifelong dreams. But the minute the Chargers informed him he was going to be their pick, everything changed.

“When I got my name called, it felt like Mike Tyson came and hit me for real,” Johnston said. “It was a lot. I’m not really an emotional person, but just the thought of me calling my mom to retire and shoutout to my grandma that passed in 2020, it brought a lot out of me.”

Being in Los Angeles is easily an ideal landing spot for Johnston and that’s before you consider his future teammates. Johnston can’t wait to get to work with Herbert, who is considered one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL.

“We’re finna go turn up,” Johnston said. “I’m very excited for that, that’s every receiver’s dream. Going somewhere where you can build and I plan on walking on the first day and doing that.”

Another thing Johnston is looking forward to is learning from Williams and Allen. The tall, big-bodied receivers have a different style than Johnston which he thinks can help grow his game and help him make an immediate impact with the Chargers.

“It’s amazing,” Johnston said. “Especially as a young guy that’s looking up to those guys for all these years and you’re in a position where you grow under their wing initially and taking everything they know and learning from it and picking up good parts from them and applying it to your game.”
