No. 20 TCU wins eighth straight with road win over Utah
No. 20 TCU passed its first road test of the season with a 75-71 win over Utah on Wednesday night.
Playing at Vivint Arena, the home of the Utah Jazz, the Horned Frogs (10-1) got big nights from Emanuel Miller and Mike Miles Jr. to come out on top of the Utes (9-4). Miller scored a season-high 21 points while Miles added 18 points.
For one of the few times this season, coach Jamie Dixon had his entire roster at his disposal as Eddie Lampkin returned to the starting lineup after missing Sunday’s blowout win over Mississippi Valley State. Lampkin had 10 rebounds in his return.
After securing a six-point lead at halftime, TCU leaned on Miller and Miles to take turns carrying the offense. The duo scored the first eight points of the second half to help TCU maintain a 43-38 lead with just over 15 minutes to play.
The Horned Frogs and Utes exchanged body blows for the next 10 minutes of gametime with Utah tying the game three times during the stretch. With just 6:07 remaining, TCU’s lead had been cut to one, 60-59, but that’s when the Horned Frogs hit another gear.
Chuck O’Bannon and Damion Baugh hit crucial three-pointers for a 8-0 run that finally put Utah away. JaKobe Coles was clutch down the stretch and hit six free throws to clinch the game.
Utah held a small 15-13 lead midway through the first half, but the Horned Frogs responded with a 14-2 that would put them in front for good.
Miller hit his second three-pointer of the half to break a 15-all tie, and TCU scored nine more points with baskets from four different players. The Horned Frogs would lead by as many as 10 points in the first half before a buzzer-beating three before halftime by Gabe Madsen. The score was 35-29 at halftime.
What’s next for TCU?
The Horned Frogs will close out their non-conference slate against Central Arkansas on Wednesday, Dec. 28, at 4 p.m. at Schollmaier Arena. TCU will open Big 12 play on Dec. 31 vs. Texas Tech at home.
