TCU Horned Frogs baseball completes sweep of No. 4 Texas Tech in impressive fashion
TCU baseball coach Kirk Saarloos offered some advice a couple of days ago.
“Never try to figure out baseball because it’s crazy,” Saarloos said, smiling.
That comment came after TCU rallied for a 7-4 victory over No. 4 Texas Tech on Thursday night. It could’ve been repeated again Friday night when TCU hung on for a 4-3 victory over Tech. Or again on Saturday afternoon when the Frogs completed the sweep of the Red Raiders in impressive fashion, running away for an 11-3 victory at Lupton Stadium.
It marked the most impressive series to date for the Horned Frogs (24-12, 10-5 Big 12), who entered the series with losses in seven of their previous 10. But they didn’t look like a team in the midst of a midseason slump this weekend.
Saturday served as an exclamation point.
The Frogs jumped out to an early lead on a solo home run by Reed Spenrath in the second inning. Spenrath made it 2-0 with a run-scoring single in the third. TCU extended its lead to 3-0 in the fourth on an RBI single by Elijah Nunez.
Tech (27-12, 7-5) pulled to within 3-1 with one run in the fifth, but then TCU pulled away with three runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh.
The sixth was highlighted by a two-run double by Tommy Sacco and the seventh on a three-run double by Nunez. The Frogs added one more on Kurtis Byrne’s RBI triple in the eighth. Nunez finished the game with five RBIs from the leadoff spot. Spenrath and Sacco each had two RBIs.
TCU starter Brett Walker earned the victory with his best start in Big 12 play. He allowed one run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts over six innings. Frog relievers Augie Mihlbauer, Luke Savage and Drew Hill closed out the game.
TCU returns to action with a home game against UT-Arlington on Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Lupton Stadium.
