Where is TCU Horned Frogs basketball headed? Projection ‘Madness’ has begun
TCU basketball will officially learn its March Madness fate on Sunday afternoon, but one location is being projected by the top “bracketology” experts.
ESPN’s Joe Lunardi and CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm both have the Horned Frogs as an 8-seed playing in San Diego on the opening weekend. Lunardi has TCU set to face 9-seed Seton Hall, while Palm has a matchup against 9-seed Davidson.
San Diego is hosting games on Friday and Sunday at Viejas Arena, which is the home venue for San Diego State.
Both experts have TCU (20-12) as being part of the “South Region” where Arizona is projected as the 1-seed. That means if TCU won its Round of 64 game, which would be the program’s first NCAA Tournament victory in 35 years, it’d likely see Arizona with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line.
At the end of the day, TCU is excited to return to March Madness for the first time since 2018 and San Diego would be a desirable draw. The school has a strong alumni base in the Southern California area. School officials were pleased with the support they received earlier this season at the SoCal Challenge in San Juan Capistrano.
But the San Diego destination is far from official. Things are fluid when it comes to the NCAA Tournament and how the selection committee seeds the field.
USA Today’s projected bracket, for instance, has TCU listed a 7-seed against 10-seed Miami (Florida) in Pittsburgh.
The only known thing about TCU’s destination is that it won’t be Fort Worth, which is hosting the opening weekend for the first time in 52 years. TCU is serving as the “host” school for the games at Dickies Arena and NCAA policy states that teams can’t play at sites where the school is the “host.”
So TCU will land in one of seven destinations: San Diego, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Buffalo, Greenville (South Carolina), Portland or Pittsburgh.
The NCAA’s Selection Show is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday.
Miles honored
TCU sophomore guard Mike Miles was named to the Big 12’s All-Tournament team on Saturday night. Miles is the program’s first player to earn All-Big 12 Tournament team honors.
Miles averaged 13.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in leading TCU to the semifinals.
Along with Miles, Kansas’ Ochai Agbaji and Christian Braun; Texas Tech’s Terrence Shannon Jr. and Bryson Williams; and Oklahoma’s Umoja Gibson were on the team. Agbaji was named the tournament’s most outstanding player.
