TCU basketball’s Mike Miles gives update on ankle injury after huge win over Texas
Mike Miles declared himself good to go after sustaining a right ankle injury in TCU’s 65-60 victory over No. 22 Texas in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament on Thursday.
Miles twisted his right ankle landing on someone’s foot midway through the second half and briefly headed to the locker room. He returned shortly after but was clearly bothered by the ankle the rest of the game.
“It hurt,” Miles said. “I went in the back and got it taped extra even more. I just wanted to get back there and help my team. Good job for them, they came back even with me out. I’m proud of them and I’m proud of the way everybody played when I was out.”
As Miles headed toward the buses, he said that he’d “for sure” be available for the semifinal game.
“C’mon man,” Miles said, smiling.
TCU will face No. 6 Kansas at 6 p.m. Friday at the T-Mobile Center.
Miles, who started the game 0 for 7 and scored only two points in the first half, sparked the Frogs’ rally in the second half. He opened the second half by scoring 11 points on 3 for 3 shooting, including two 3-pointers, before sustaining the ankle injury with 9:07 left.
Miles, who has been playing through sore wrists for several weeks, eventually returned but shot only once in the final seven minutes. It didn’t matter as TCU used a collective effort to storm back for the victory.
“I told everybody, ‘Let’s do it for Mike,’” said TCU freshman center Eddie Lampkin, who scored the go-ahead basket with 38 seconds left.
“If we lost, everybody would’ve said we didn’t have Mike. Why do that? We’re all good on the team. All 10 of us can play, so I was like, ‘Everybody step up. We can win this game.’”
Miles finished with 13 points on 4 of 12 shooting with three assists and no turnovers in 34 minutes. Miles is averaging a team-leading 15.1 points per game.
