TCU football appeared to have a potential replacement for its running backs coach opening already on staff, but sources indicate that head coach Sonny Dykes is targeting outside candidates to fill the role.

Dykes is in the market for a RB coach after Ra’Shaad Samples left to join the Los Angeles Rams. Many believed that Dykes could look internally with offensive analyst and recruiting coordinator Bryan Carrington on staff. Carrington is considered an elite recruiter and a rising star in the industry with his most extensive work being with running backs, but he’s never been a full-time position coach at the college level.

Dykes would prefer to land someone with more experience. He’s also looking to hire someone with strong recruiting ties to Dallas, sources said, something that Samples had with his father, Reginald, being a longtime high school coach in the area.

Carrington, who has developed relationships with players and trainers across the state, is a Houston native.

It’s unclear who may emerge on Dykes’ short list for the job.

Spring practices

TCU opens spring practices on March 22 with the spring scrimmage set for Friday, April 22, at Amon G. Carter Stadium.

Dykes has told fans they are welcome to attend the spring practices. However, fans interested in coming out will have an early wake-up call. In his latest newsletter to fans, TCU athletic director Jeremiah Donati revealed that practices will start at 6:40 a.m.

Donati also revealed the spring scrimmage will start at 7 p.m. on April 22 and be broadcast on ESPN+.

Transfer news

TCU added another transfer this week, landing Connecticut offensive tackle Robby Rochester. Rochester, a Southlake Carroll product, was part of the 2019 class.

Rochester played in two games for the Huskies last season. UConn did not play football during his true freshman season in 2020 due to the pandemic.
