‘Freak accident.’ Texas Tech’s McCullar sprains ankle stepping on Jamie Dixon’s foot
Texas Tech junior guard Kevin McCullar sprained his left ankle in a bizarre fashion during the Red Raiders’ 82-69 victory over TCU on Saturday afternoon.
McCullar launched a 3-pointer from the left wing with 5:08 left in the first half. The shot went in, but McCullar backpedaled into TCU’s bench area and ended up stepping on Frogs coach Jamie Dixon’s foot. McCullar’s left foot collided with Dixon’s left foot as McCullar started to retreat to the defensive end.
McCullar went to the floor afterward and had to be helped off the court by trainers. He did not return in the second half. McCullar finished with seven points and one assist in 13 minutes.
Tech coach Mark Adams called it a “freak accident” in his postgame news conference.
“It’s an injury, nothing’s broken,” Adams said. “It looks like it’s going to be an ankle sprain right now. We’re hoping for the best and hopeful he’ll be ready for Baylor (on Wednesday). We’ll just have to see how he progresses, but I know he’s getting treatment as we speak.”
Dixon didn’t recall the incident when asked about it afterward, saying he’d have to watch the tape but hoped the injury wasn’t serious.
McCullar entered the game averaging 11 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 32.4 minutes per game.
