TCU football reportedly in mix for USC QB transfer Jaxson Dart

TCU football is a finalist once again for a highly touted quarterback in the NCAA transfer portal.

After being linked in the Quinn Ewers sweepstakes last month, the Horned Frogs are in the mix for USC quarterback transfer Jaxson Dart, according to an On3.com report.

Oklahoma and Ole Miss are the other finalists. Dart is expected to visit all three schools in the coming days. Dart was rated as a four-star prospect and the No. 10 quarterback in the country for the 2021 class, according to 247Sports. He has three years of eligibility remaining.

TCU coach Sonny Dykes is known for his ability to develop quarterbacks. At Cal, Jared Goff became the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft under Dykes’ tutelage. At SMU, he had success with transfers such as Shane Buechele (Texas) and Tanner Mordecai (Oklahoma).

Dykes has said TCU’s quarterback competition is open going into the offseason. Max Duggan has started 29 games the past three seasons, but he is not a lock to earn the starting job going into 2022.

Chandler Morris is another returning quarterback who will be given a look. Sam Jackson joined the program as a highly touted recruit, too, and will be entering his second season in the program. Dykes and his staff signed one QB, Josh Hoover, during the early signing period last month.

Other QBs on the roster include Luke Pardee and Trent Battle. Alex Honig, a German who joined the program as a developmental quarterback project last year, is listed as a tight end. Honig, who is rehabbing his way back from a season-ending foot injury, is working out with the tight ends this winter but Honig still views himself as a quarterback for now.

If TCU is able to land Dart, he would join the group as one of the front-runners for the job. Dart, who is listed at 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, completed 117-of-189 passes for 1,353 yards with nine touchdowns and five interceptions in six games as a true freshman last season. He also rushed for two TDs.

An underlying question for TCU, though, is whether Dart would be eligible to participate in spring practices if he doesn’t enroll by 5 p.m. Friday. Sources have indicated that is the university’s deadline for students to enroll in the spring semester, which is one week earlier than other schools.

TCU is in the midst of winter workouts. Spring practices are scheduled to start March 22 with the spring scrimmage taking place Friday April 22 at Amon G. Carter Stadium.
