TCU football sets date for the first spring game of the Sonny Dykes era
TCU football is going Friday Night Lights style for its spring game this year.
A tentative date of Friday, April 22 has been scheduled for the debut spring game of the Sonny Dykes’ era.
The Horned Frogs’ team returned to campus this week with the spring semester starting on Monday. Offseason workouts are underway with spring football practices expected to start March 22. The NCAA allows programs to conduct 15 practices in the spring.
TCU is entering a new era under Dykes. The school parted ways with longtime coach Gary Patterson on Oct. 31, and hired Dykes away from SMU.
Dykes and his staff have created plenty of momentum since taking over. They took a deliberate approach in signing their inaugural recruiting class during the early period last month, and have been active in fortifying the roster through the NCAA transfer portal of late.
The Frogs have landed seven players in the portal so far with the latest being Colorado safety Mark Perry. TCU continues to talk with other players in the portal, but they must enroll by Friday to be eligible to participate in spring activities.
TCU is coming off a 5-7 season. Patterson was fired after the team started 3-5 with Jerry Kill filling the interim role the final four games.
TCU will open the 2022 season on Friday, Sept. 2 at Colorado. The home opener is set for Sept. 10 against Tarleton State at Amon G. Carter Stadium.
