Gay wins U.S. crown in 100; TCU’s Baker seventh

Tyson Gay fell behind early only to make up ground in a hurry to win the 100 meters at the U.S. championships Friday night. TCU’s Ronnie Baker was seventh.

Gay, at age 32, finished in 9.87 seconds to secure a spot at the world championships in Beijing this summer. Gay flew past Baylor standout Trayvon Bromell, second at 9.96. Michael Rodgers was third to join Justin Gatlin on the world squad. Gatlin didn’t compete because he had an automatic bye courtesy of his Diamond League title.

Baker posted a time of 10.19. In the semifinals earlier Friday, Baker matched his all-conditions personal best of 9.94, according to gofrogs.com, to finish fourth in heat two and seventh overall.

He now sets his sights on the World University Games from July 3-14 in Gwangju City, South Korea.

In heat one of the 100 semifinal, TCU alum Charles Silmon missed the cut by 0.001 seconds with a fifth-place finish.

TCU alum Jessica Young didn’t qualify out of the women’s 100 semifinals, finishing 11th overall in 11.06.

Tori Bowie surged past English Gardner to win the 100 in 10.81. Oregon star Jasmine Todd was third.

Today, TCU’s Megan Smith (discus) and alum Whitney Gipson (long jump) will compete.

Former Baylor and Arlington Lamar standout Jeremy Wariner didn’t qualify out of the semifinals in the men’s 400, finishing 13th.

Austin’s and former Texas standout Sanya Richards-Ross missed out on qualifying for the 400 final. She finished fifth in her heat during the semis. Richards-Ross could always make the team as part of the relay. Allyson Felix won her heat to advance.

Gay hasn’t competed at worlds since 2009. He withdrew in 2013 after failing a drug test that resulted in a one-year suspension.
