A CB playing RB? That’s what TCU football plans to do with injuries piling up
TCU football will be short-handed at running back tonight, as expected.
Sophomore running backs Zach Evans and Kendre Miller are officially out as neither made the trip to No. 10 Oklahoma State. So is Daimarqua Foster.
That leaves senior Emari Demercado as the only scholarship running back available today. However, TCU will turn to freshman cornerback Ahmonte Watkins as a running back option tonight.
Watkins was rated as the No. 1 all-purpose running back in Texas by 247Sports coming out of Klein Forest High School. He then transitioned to defensive back in college.
Evans is missing his third straight game with a turf toe injury sustained at Texas Tech on Oct. 9. Evans is the team’s leading rusher with 648 yards.
Miller is also sidelined after being knocked out of last week’s victory over then-No. 12 Baylor. Miller took a hard shot to the ribs in the first half and didn’t return. Foster is not expected to play again this season.
That leaves Demercado as the only scholarship player listed on the RB depth chart available. Demercado had 34 yards rushing on 19 carries last week against Baylor.
The Frogs are averaging 196 yards rushing a game this season, but the Cowboys’ defense is playing some of its best football to date. Oklahoma State is allowing just 86.2 yards rushing per game.
In other injury news, quarterback Max Duggan (foot) made the trip and is expected to suit up. But Duggan is an emergency option with Chandler Morris in line for his second straight start.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Boone Pickens Stadium.
