Dallas Cowboys’ Kellen Moore no longer a candidate for TCU football job, sources say
Kellen Moore’s next coaching stop won’t be at TCU.
Moore is longer a candidate for the head coaching position with the Horned Frogs, sources told the Star-Telegram on Monday. Instead, Moore is expected to pursue NFL opportunities after the season.
Moore, 33, is viewed as a rising star. He played his final three seasons in the NFL with the Cowboys from 2015-17 and then stepped into the quarterbacks coach job in 2018. He has been the team’s offensive coordinator since 2019. The Cowboys have the the top-ranked offense in the NFL, averaging 434.3 yards per game.
Moore drew heavy interest last offseason from his alma mater Boise State for its head coaching vacancy, but he eventually withdrew his name from consideration.
TCU paid former coach Gary Patterson a top-10 salary this season, and the program has the resources to make a strong offer to high-end candidates.
Other candidates who are known to be on TCU’s list include Iowa State’s Matt Campbell, SMU’s Sonny Dykes, Louisiana’s Billy Napier, Jackson State’s Deion Sanders, Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken and Clemson defensive coordinator Brett Venables. Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott and Denver Broncos running backs coach Curtis Modkins are also among those in consideration.
TCU has made “great progress” in its coaching search but a hiring is “not imminent,” a source said on Monday.
TCU athletic director Jeremiah Donati would like to have the next coach in place by early December with the early signing period for the 2022 recruiting class starting Dec. 15.
