TCU expects to have its next football coach in place before the early signing period
TCU is in the midst of a tectonic shift in its football program with the university parting ways with longtime coach Gary Patterson on Sunday.
That change has left many recruits in the 2022 class rethinking their decisions about going to TCU.
Trevon McAlpine, a three-star defensive tackle out of Saraland, Alabama, was the first to announce he’d be re-opening his recruitment on Monday. Four-star wide receivers DJ Allen (Gladewater) and Matthew Golden (Klein Cain) also announced they’d be re-opening their recruitments.
The highest-ranked prospect in the class, cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau out of Port Arthur Memorial, posted a number of question emoji faces on his Twitter account shortly after the Star-Telegram broke the news that Patterson and the university decided to part ways.
But the university plans to have its next head football coach in place before the early signing period on Dec. 15, according to a high-ranking source. Time will tell whether that coach is able to keep the 2022 recruiting class intact but the school understands the importance of having a decision made by then.
A source said that TCU already has a list of eight to 10 strong candidates who are current head coaches. SMU’s Sonny Dykes, UTSA’s Jeff Traylor and Louisiana’s Billy Napier are expected to be among those in contention for the job.
More names will likely emerge in the coming days but the process is expected to be completed by early December, if not sooner.
