The resignation of TCU football coach Gary Patterson Sunday night stunned many across college football.

The timing of Patterson’s departure — with four games remaining this season — shocked former players, fans, and longtime college football writers.

Patterson, who won a record 181 games over 21 seasons with the Horned Frogs, led them to a 13-0 season in 2010, including a Rose Bowl victory over Wisconsin. Patterson will be 62 in February.

Several current players, including defensive back Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson, nephew of TCU legend LaDainian Tomlinson, thanked Patterson on social media.

“Thank you,” current running back Zach Evans posted on Twitter. “GREATLY APPRECIATED.”
