TCU basketball’s Miles earns preseason recognition from Big 12; Frogs to finish 8th
TCU basketball didn’t get shutout of preseason basketball awards this year.
Horned Frogs sophomore guard Mike Miles is an honorable mention selection for the All-Big 12 preseason team as voted on by the league’s coaches. The team was revealed on Wednesday and Miles is the only TCU player on it.
The Frogs didn’t have any selections on the 2020 preseason team last year.
Miles is coming off a standout freshman season, averaging 13.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists for the Frogs. He was named to the Big 12’s All-Freshman team and was All-Big 12 honorable mention.
Miles was part of USA Basketball’s U19 Team this past summer, helping it win the gold medal at the FIBA World Cup in Latvia. Miles started six of seven games, averaging 9.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.9 assists. The team was coached by TCU’s Jamie Dixon.
The All-Big 12 preseason team featured six players on it — Baylor’s Matthew Mayer; Kansas’ Ochai Agbaji, Remy Martin and David McCormack; Texas’ Marcus Carr; and Texas Tech’s Terrence Shannon Jr. Joining Miles as honorable mention were Baylor’s James Akinjo; Oklahoma State’s Avery Anderson and Moussa Cisse; Texas’ Andrew Jones and Tre Mitchell; and West Virginia’s Taz Sherman.
Individual honors went to Martin (player of the year), Carr (newcomer) and Baylor’s Kendall Brown (freshman).
Frogs picked 8th
On Thursday, the Big 12 released its preseason poll and TCU was picked to finish 8th. The Frogs are coming off a losing season for the first time under Jamie Dixon, but they overhauled the roster in the offseason.
Among the notable additions include Texas Tech transfer Micah Peavy, Texas A&M transfer Emanuel Miller and Memphis transfer Damion Baugh. Miles, guard Francisco Farabello and guard Chuck O’Bannon Jr. are among the notable returners.
The Big 12 favorite to win is Kansas, which received eight of the 10 first-place votes from the league’s coaches. The other two votes went to Texas. Defending national champion Baylor is picked third followed by Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, West Virginia, Oklahoma, TCU, Kansas State and Iowa State.
TCU opens its season against McNeese State on Nov. 11 at Schollmaier Arena.
