TCU football to have new opponent for season-opener as Tennessee Tech backs out

TCU football is searching for a new opponent for its season opener on Sept. 12.

Tennessee Tech will not be playing at TCU after the Ohio Valley Conference postponed fall sports seasons on Friday. The Ohio Valley would have allowed programs to keep nonconference matchups, but Tennessee Tech will not do so.

“Tennessee Tech has been in communication with us throughout its decision-making process and has informed us that they will not be able to play in our scheduled September 12 football game,” TCU athletic director Jeremiah Donati said. “We have had a contingency plan in place for a replacement home opponent on that date and anticipate being able to make that announcement in the near future.”

Said Tennessee Tech athletic director Mark Wilson: “My heart breaks for the student-athletes that planned to compete this fall. We know changes like this impact our student-athletes and we will be working with each of them to meet their individual needs.”

The Horned Frogs still plan to open their season on Sept. 12 at Amon G. Carter Stadium. It’s unclear who their opponent will be.

TCU had a nonconference game at SMU fall apart earlier this month when the Big 12 required schools to host a nonconference game. SMU suggested it would have been willing to play the rivalry at TCU this year, so that game could be revisited now that Tennessee Tech is not coming to town.

The Big 12 announced this week its plans to go forward with fall sports and unveiled a revised conference schedule. The American Athletic Conference, which SMU is a member of, is also going forward with plans to play football this fall.

TCU hosts Iowa State to start league play on Sept. 26 in Fort Worth.
