TCU football leaning toward FCS opponent for season opener
TCU football is close to lining up an opponent for its season opener.
Sources indicate that the Horned Frogs are leaning toward playing Tennessee Tech to open the upcoming season at Amon G. Carter Stadium. A date has yet to be finalized but it will likely be on Sept. 12.
The Big 12 decided to go with a “plus-one” model this week, with nine conference games and one home nonconference game.
TCU has played Tennessee Tech once before, defeating the FCS school 62-7 in 2010.
One of TCU coach Gary Patterson’s first coaching stops was at Tennessee Tech. He coached linebackers there in 1983-84.
TCU’s conference schedule is still to be determined. It’s unlikely that the league will keep its current conference schedule in place, according to a source.
The Big 12 is expected to come up with a new schedule, the source said, to work in more flexibility amid the coronavirus pandemic.
TCU is coming off a 5-7 season in which it missed bowl eligibility for just the third time in Patterson’s 19-year tenure. The Horned Frogs had been conducting fall camp with plans of playing a Week Zero game on Aug. 29. But, with the season starting later than expected, it’s unclear how they will go about preparing for the season.
As of now, the program is in a holding pattern.
