TCU basketball coach, others say they’re ‘saddened and angered’ by George Floyd death
TCU men’s basketball coach Jamie Dixon was among the college basketball coaches who spoke out against racial injustices on Monday.
Dixon, who is president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), shared a message from the organization that they are “saddened and angered by the death of George Floyd and other recent senseless losses of life.”
Dixon then joined the rest of the Big 12 men’s basketball coaches in delivering a message saying: “We stand together. It’s time for a change.”
“We acknowledge that sympathy alone is not enough,” the NABC board of directors said. “As coaches, we have the responsibility to use our platforms to push back against hate, and to stand alongside those — including many of our players and colleagues — who for too long have been marginalized. Racism and prejudice of any form have no place in our world. We demand all coaches to join in the cause — by listening, by speaking out and by acting — of making equality for all a reality.”
The TCU men’s basketball team had a virtual team meeting on Sunday where they discussed Floyd’s death, among other topics. Dixon said the team has frequent and ongoing discussions on race and equality, bringing in a number of speakers over the course of a school year.
TCU football coach Gary Patterson released a video message Sunday night echoing the same message. That has been met with praise by former TCU football players.
