TCU football picks up two big-time commitments for 2021 recruiting class

TCU football has doubled the size of its 2021 recruiting class in the last few days.

The Horned Frogs landed two commitments with Wichita Falls Hirschi defensive end Chris Murray committing late Thursday, and then Choctaw (Oklahoma) wide receiver Chase Jackson making his intentions known on Sunday morning.

With those two commitments, TCU now has four hard commits for its 2021 class along with German quarterback Alexander Honig and Daphne (Alabama) quarterback Trent Battle. The class is currently ranked No. 58 in the country and No. 9 in the Big 12 by 247Sports.

Both commitments are viewed favorably by Jeremy Clark, recruiting expert and Horned Frog Blitz publisher.

Murray fills a need for TCU in terms of defensive end depth in the coming years. At 6-foot-3, 240 pounds, he’s got a projectable frame. He also made a seamless transition from linebacker to defensive end last season, finishing with 24 tackles for loss and 13 sacks.

Murray chose TCU over schools such as Texas Tech, Houston, SMU, Arizona and Colorado. His brother, Lloyd, is a defensive tackle at Colorado.

“The staff was looking for defensive end help and Murray definitely gives that to them,” Clark said. “I’m really impressed with Murray’s athleticism. He’s got a tremendous first step and uses his hands well to get around the tackle. Another aspect of his game I really like when evaluating his film is his pursuit and high motor. The kid just doesn’t stop.”

Jackson has flown under the radar for the most part since he switched to receiver last season. Still, he put up big-time numbers with 56 receptions, 1,342 yards receiving and 15 touchdowns as a junior last season.

“I personally feel he’s one of the best-kept secrets in Oklahoma,” Clark said. “Jackson has game-breaking ability at receiver. He can play outside or inside at the slot. He shows tremendous versatility. He has great speed and shows that speed on several vertical passes he hauls in time and time again on his highlights.

“He’s one of those kids that by the end of his senior season, it wouldn’t surprise me if even more programs tried to come into the picture for him.”
