‘What an honor.’ Football great Jerry Hughes headlines TCU’s 2020 Hall of Fame class

Jerry Hughes is a Hall of Famer. As far as TCU fans are concerned.

Hughes is the headliner for TCU’s 2020 Hall of Fame class, which was announced on Wednesday.

“Wow. What an honor,” Hughes wrote on his social media account.

Other honorees in the eight-member class include Michael Cannon (men’s track and field), Bryan Holaday (baseball), Jamie MacCurdy Kizer (women’s swimming and diving), Victor Payne (football) and Roy Williams (men’s track and field).

The school is also recognizing Nolan Brawley (men’s track and field) as the “Vintage” inductee, as well as senior associate athletics director T. Ross Bailey as the first-ever special contributor inductee.

Induction ceremonies are scheduled for Oct. 1 with the class being recognized at the Oct. 3 football game vs. Oklahoma State.

Hughes is the name most TCU fans will recognize first. He is one of two players in program history to be a two-time consensus first-team All-American, earning the honors in 2008 and 2009. The only other player to earn two consensus All-America honors was center Darrell Lester in 1934 and 1935.

Hughes had a nation-leading 15 sacks in 2008, and closed his college career with 11.5 sacks in 2009. He won the Ted Hendricks Award as the nation’s top defensive end and the Lott IMPACT Trophy in 2009.

Hughes was a first-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2010 and is set to enter his 11th year in the league with the Buffalo Bills in 2020.

Here’s a look at the other inductees:

Cannon: a two-time All-American in the 400m and 4x400.

Holaday: won the 2010 Johnny Bench Award as the nation’s best catcher in helping TCU reach its first College World Series that season.

MacCurdy Kizer: TCU’s athlete of the year for all sports in 2002 and TCU’s most valuable swimmer all four years.

Payne: a guard who made 36 career starts, including during LaDainian Tomlinson’s 2,000-yard season in 2000, and was All-Conference USA in 2001.

Williams: 2000 NCAA champion in the 4x400 and a three-time All-American.

Brawley: a three-year letterman who was the Southwest Conference runner-up in the mile.

Bailey: associated with TCU for six decades, being named head athletics trainer at the age of 24.
