Some schools are doing a virtual spring commencement. Here’s what TCU plans to do

TCU is postponing its spring commencement until August, Chancellor Victor Boschini announced on Friday.

Boschini posted a short video clip with the update amid the coronavirus pandemic, saying commencement would be held on Saturday, Aug. 8. The university’s “senior toast” will be on Friday, Aug. 7.

The commencement had been scheduled for Saturday, May 9 at Schollmaier Arena.

A number of colleges have opted for a virtual commencement amid the pandemic, and TCU considered that option. Ultimately, though, Boschini felt it would be best to postpone it.

“We feel bad, the faculty and staff here, we feel bad because you’ve been ripped out of a lot of things,” Boschini said. “We’re going to try to make sure we give those back to you.

“We’re going to try and give you one last look at TCU. We’re going to try and give you one last long conversation with those kids you met freshman year. We’re going to try and give you one last discussion with one of your favorite professors.”

Every school across the country is facing similar decisions in the coming days with restrictions on large gatherings to try and slow the spread of coronavirus.

Spring commencement at the University of Texas, UT-Arlington and the six other University of Texas System academic institutions were postponed earlier this week. North Texas has also postponed its graduating ceremonies.

Rescheduled dates for those colleges have not been announced.

Boschini said additional details would be sent to graduating students soon.

TCU returned from an extended spring break this week with online-only classes.
