TCU senior Desmond Bane makes more history as Big 12 announces postseason awards

TCU senior guard Desmond Bane has cemented his legacy as one of the program’s greats.

He’ll leave as the program’s all-time winningest player and 3-point king. On Sunday, he added another honor to the list.

Bane became TCU’s first player to earn All-Big 12 first-team honors as voted on by the league’s coaches. Bane was the only TCU player who received recognition by the league’s coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players.

Bane earned second-team honors by the league coaches and by the Associated Press’ All-Big 12 team last season. Former point guard Alex Robinson was named second team on the AP team, and third team by the coaches.

Other players who have received second-team honors since TCU joined the Big 12 in 2012 include Kenrich Williams (2017-18) and Vladimir Brodziansky (2016-17).

Bane certainly deserved the honors this season. He’s the conference’s second-leading scorer (16.4 points) and leads it in 3-point percentage (43.4%) and 3-point makes per game (2.87).

For his career, Bane has helped the program win 84 games (and counting) over his four seasons and become a beloved figure on campus.

Athletic director Jeremiah Donati recently described Bane as “Mr. TCU.”

Bane and TCU sustained a gut-wrenching loss on Saturday, blowing a 20-point lead in a 78-76 loss to Oklahoma at Schollmaier Arena.

A victory would have given the Horned Frogs a bye in the Big 12 tournament, but instead they’ll be the No. 7-seed and face 10-seed Kansas State on Wednesday night.

Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Kansas City’s Sprint Center.

All-Big 12 team

Along with Bane, other first-team honors went to Kansas’ Udoka Azubuike and Devon Dotson; Oklahoma’s Kristian Doolittle; and Baylor’s Jared Butler.

Azubuike, Dotson and Butler were unanimous selections with Azubuike being named the league’s player of the year.

Individual honors also went to KU’s Marcus Garrett (defensive player of the year), Baylor’s Davion Mitchell (newcomer), Texas Tech’s Jahmi’us Ramsey (freshman), Baylor’s Devonte Bandoo (sixth man), Baylor’s Freddie Gillespie (most improved) and Baylor’s Scott Drew (coach).
