TCU coach Gary Patterson has ‘no updates’ on his staff
TCU football coach Gary Patterson isn’t ready to announce staff additions quite yet.
When asked about a report saying that TCU is expected to hire Bryan Applewhite as its running backs coach, Patterson simply said: “I have no updates.”
Instead, Patterson is waiting for everything to be finalized on his staff. He’ll make one announcement when he has everything put together.
The expectation is for Doug Meacham to rejoin the staff as inside receivers coach, and Applewhite to take over as running backs coach. Again, though, nothing is official at this time.
Applewhite most recently served as the recruiting coordinator and running backs coach at Colorado State. He was with the Rams for five seasons from 2015-19.
Before his stint at CSU, Applewhite coached at Louisiana-Monroe for five seasons as the recruiting coordinator and running backs coach. He’s also coached at Wyoming and Northern Colorado, his alma mater where he was a fullback on teams that won back-to-back NCAA Division II national championships in 1996 and 1997.
Meacham and Applewhite would be the two on-field assistant hires to replace Curtis Luper, the former co-offensive coordinator and running backs coach who left for Missouri, and Chris Thomsen, the former offensive line coach who bolted for Florida State.
The only confirmed coaching change by Patterson so far is moving Jarrett Anderson back to coach the offensive line.
Another potential addition would be a veteran coach in an advising-type role, which would be a newly created job that doesn’t count as one of the 10 on-field assistants.
It remains to be seen who Patterson will tab as the top option for that position, if it is created.
