Five TCU Horned Frogs named first-team All-Big 12 by conference coaches

The TCU football team didn’t have the most memorable season in 2019, becoming one of just three teams to fall short of bowl eligibility in the Gary Patterson era.

But the Horned Frogs had plenty of standout seasons from individual players. A number were honored by the Big 12 on Wednesday, including five on the first-team.

No other school in the conference had as many as TCU’s five players.

Linebacker Garret Wallow, cornerback Jeff Gladney, free safety Trevon Moehrig, defensive tackle Ross Blacklock and kicker Jonathan Song were voted to the first-team. It’s the first time for each to receive that distinction.

Safety Ar’Darius Washington also received big-time recognition, being named the league’s freshman defensive player of the year. Washington had a team-leading five interceptions on the season.

Washington is the third TCU freshman to earn that award since it joined the league in 2012.

Wallow, meanwhile, led the Big 12 with 125 tackles. Blacklock had nine tackles for loss including 3.5 sacks.

Gladney, who was a second-team All-Big 12 player last season, finished with 15 passes defended and one interception. Moehrig also had 15 passes defended and four interceptions.

Song was a no-brainer as the best kicker in the league (23-of-24 field goals and 39-of-39 point-after attempts).

The Big 12’s head coaches vote for the awards and are not allowed to vote for their own players.

Other honors included —

Jalen Reagor named to the second-team as wide receiver and returner. Reagor earned second-team honors as a WR last season.

Pro Wells named to the second-team as tight end. He’s the program’s first tight end to earn first- or second-team honors since the late Cody McCarty received first-team Conference USA honors in 2004.

Honorable mentions went to Darius Anderson (RB), Taye Barber (WR), Corey Bethley (DL), Blacklock (DLoY), Max Duggan (OFoY), Cordel Iwuagwu (OL), Song (STPoY) and Wallow (DPoY).

Individual winners

Fittingly, the top two teams — Oklahoma and Baylor — had the most earn the individual awards. Both had three recipients.

OU’s included quarterback Jalen Hurts (offensive newcomer), defensive lineman LaRon Stokes (defensive newcomer) and Creed Humphrey (co-offensive linemen).

Baylor’s included defensive lineman James Lynch (defensive player and defensive lineman) and coach Matt Rhule (coach of the year).

Oklahoma State running back Chuba Hubbard was named the league’s offensive player of the year, and Cowboys quarterback Spencer Sanders earned offensive freshman of the year recognition.

K-State returner Joshua Youngblood was the special teams player of the year, and West Virginia’s Colton McKivitz was co-offensive lineman along with OU’s Humphrey.
