Frogs improve to 8-1 for only third time in school history behind Moore and Akomolafe
Senior forward Jordan Moore continues to find her offensive rhythm by contributing a season-high 23 points in TCU’s 69-40 victory over Southern on Sunday at Schollmaier Arena.
Moore, who is averaging 17.2 points per game, was cooking early with 12 of the Frogs’ 14 first quarter points.
TCU improved to 8-1 for the third time in program history. The Frogs had previously started the season with an 8-1 record in only the 1997-98 (8-1) and 2003-04 (10-1) campaigns.
“We are grateful. Grateful for the time that we had to prepare for this team and grateful for the leadership that we have helping us through finals week in the classroom and on the floor,” Frogs head coach Raegan Pebley said in a press release. “This is a Southern team that is very road tested with games at Baylor, Arizona State, Kentucky and Southern Alabama. I was hesitant with this game because I knew they would play us defensively in a way we haven’t seen this year.”
Moore didn’t have any issues with that defense though as she posted 20 of her game-high 23 points in the first half. Until a jumper early in the fourth quarter, the Round Rock, Texas, native had made 18 consecutive shots dating back to the third quarter of TCU’s win over Army on Dec. 2, a stretch of over eight quarters of play.
TCU’s defense was distinct as the Frogs outscored Southern (3-6) 24-7 in the second quarter to head into halftime with a 23-point lead.
Junior forward Adeloa Akomolafe sealed Sunday’s win by scoring all 12 of her points in the third quarter. Akomolafe added 8 rebounds and freshman Yummy Morris sniffed a double-double by posting a career-high in both points (12) and rebounds (8).
The Jaguars struggled from the floor, shooting 29 percent from the field with 18 turnovers.
TCU will look to continue its 5-game win streak when Sam Houston State comes to Fort Worth on Dec. 20 at 6:30 p.m.
