TCU

One of TCU’s best offensive players decides to transfer. What’s next for the Frogs?

Quarterback Shawn Robinson is transferring from TCU after two seasons with the program, sources have confirmed.

Robinson is the second player to transfer from TCU this season. Running back Kenedy Snell announced intentions to transfer in October.

247Sports first reported the news.

Robinson’s decision isn’t too surprising to some. This is a player who went to three different schools in his high school career -- Saginaw Chisholm Trail; Denton Guyer; and DeSoto -- before landing at TCU.

Robinson had a sensational senior season at DeSoto, leading it to a state championship. He threw for more than 3,400 yards with 28 touchdowns and rushed for another 1,469 yards and 19 TDs on the ground.

Robinson earned a four-star rating by 247Sports, and became one of the highest-rated recruits for TCU under coach Gary Patterson. He started one game as a true freshman in 2017, leading the Frogs to a win at Texas Tech, and opened this season as the starter.

Robinson started the first seven games this season, going 3-4. He was 124-for-204 passing for 1,334 yards with nine touchdowns and eight interceptions this season. He also rushed for 301 yards on 49 carries, scoring three times.

Robinson underwent season-ending shoulder surgery after the Oklahoma game. He initially sustained the injury in the Iowa State game on Sept. 29, but tried to play through it.

Robinson struggled in those games, though. He threw two interceptions against Texas Tech, and was just 3-for-8 to start the OU game before being pulled for Mike Collins. Collins sparked the offense to four consecutive scoring drives.

A few days after the OU game, Patterson revealed Robinson would undergo surgery. The thought had been Robinson would return to compete for the starting job in the spring, but he’s got other plans.

Robinson will enter the NCAA transfer portal on Monday and sit out next season with his new team. He’ll then have two years of eligibility to play the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

For TCU, it will go into next season with three scholarship quarterbacks for now. Collins, prized freshman recruit Justin Rogers and incoming commit Max Duggan are expected to compete for the starting job in 2019.

TCU could look to bring in a grad transfer at quarterback as well.

Collins is the only player with college experience on the roster, and replaced Robinson as the starter. But Collins went down with an injury in the Baylor game on Nov. 17.

Fifth-year senior Grayson Muehlstein has stepped in, leading the Frogs to wins over Baylor and Oklahoma State to become bowl eligible.

TCU faces Cal in the Cheez-It Bowl on Dec. 26 in Phoenix.
