TCU baseball returns home after weather delay to play Texas Southern
The TCU baseball team returns from a road trip and a weather delay to meet Texas Southern on Wednesday at Lupton Stadium. Right-hander Mitchell Traver will make his second start of the season, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Icy weather across North Texas forced the Horned Frogs (6-1) to stay two extra days in Arizona after taking two of three games from Arizona State over the weekend. They were flying home Tuesday afternoon. The Texas Southern (4-4) game was scheduled for Tuesday but was pushed back a day. Snow is forecast early Wednesday morning, but temperatures are expected to rise into the 40s by noon.
A win would keep TCU rolling before a home series against Cal Poly this weekend. The Frogs, ranked No. 1 by Collegiate Baseball, beat ASU 3-2 on Sunday after Cody Jones singled home Evan Williams with two outs in the ninth inning. Closer Riley Ferrell put away the Sun Devils in the bottom of the inning to earn his first save of the season and help TCU rebound from a 7-6 loss Saturday.
Traver (1-0), a sophomore, hasn’t given up a run in eight innings this year. He debuted with two innings of relief in TCU’s opening series against Southern Illinois and then pitched six innings for a win in his first career start Feb. 17 against UT Arlington.
Jones has sparked the offense from the leadoff spot. Despite going 0-for-12 against ASU before his game-winning hit, he leads TCU with 10 hits and has a .419 on-base percentage.
