TCU recap: Early mistake, West Virginia quarterback doom Frogs

A fumble on the opening kickoff return led to a touchdown three plays later, and TCU never recovered in a 34-10 loss at No. 12 West Virginia on Saturday.

The Mountaineers (6-0, 3-0) stayed unbeaten, holding the Horned Frogs 30 points under their season scoring average.

Deante Gray’s fumble on the opening return gave West Virginia possession at the TCU 17, and Skyler Howard threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Daikiel Shorts three plays later. It was the first of four touchdown passes for the senior from Fort Worth.

West Virginia led 14-0 two possessions later on Shelton Gibson’s 22-yard touchdown catch, but TCU cut the lead to 14-10 on a 30-yard field goal by Brandon Hatfield and Jaelan Austin’s 11-yard touchdown catch.

But the Mountaineers responded immediately with Gary Jenning’s 11-yard touchdown catch and held a 21-10 halftime lead.

Howard led two more scoring drives in the third quarter for a 31-10 lead.

TCU (4-3, 2-2) got 103 yards rushing from Kyle Hicks. Quarterback Kenny Hill was intercepted once and sacked twice.
