The UT Arlington softball team took a pair of run-rule victories at the Maverick Invitational on Saturday to make school history by winning the first 10 games to start the season.

UTA beat Princeton 9-1 in the first game before blanking South Dakota State 8-0. The perfect start bested a 9-0 open to the 1980 season.

“It feels good,” UTA coach Kristie Fox said. “It is hard to win 10 games in a row at all, so for the girls to come out and stay focused and not let the moments get too big, I am really proud of them.

“Our pitching staff is doing a good job of coming together and helping each other out.”

Sandra Mendoza led the way offensively with six hits on the day. Mendoza knocked in six runs, three coming in each game, and scored four runs.

Sam Montes gave up three hits and no runs in 4  2/3 innings of relief against Princeton.

Sam Clackley pitched a one-hit shutout against South Dakota State.

TCU men roll

Strong singles play helped lead the No. 3 TCU men’s tennis team to its 18th straight victory at home under coach David Roditi with a 7-0 win over No. 61 Cal Poly on Saturday.

After winning the doubles point, the Horned Frogs (6-2) took the first sets on all six singles courts over the Mustangs (3-5) and ultimately claimed wins in 12 of the 13 sets.

Trey Daniel picked up his first win in a dual match this season and put TCU up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory before No. 122 Alex Rybakov quickly put away Ben Donovan 6-1, 6-2.

Reese Stalder clinched the match and recorded win No. 12 this season as he downed Tim Tan 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 6 position.

“I am really pleased with the way we played, especially in the singles and doubles,” Roditi said. “We won 12 out of 13 sets in singles and that is a good day for us.”

UNT in finals

Harley Perella highlighted a three-run ninth inning with a two-run single and North Texas softball surprised No. 21 Baylor 7-5 to reach the finals of the Getterman Classic in Waco.

The Mean Green (5-4) will play Baylor at noon Sunday for the championship.

UNT later beat Liberty 1-0 when Stacey Underwood and Jessica Elder combined on a three-hit shutout. Underwood pitched seven innings in relief against Baylor.
