Defense helps UTA women win on road
Rebekah Van Dijk had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds and UT Arlington used stout second-half defense to beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 42-28 on Saturday for its first road victory of the season.
Chaun Willams added 10 points and the Mavericks (4-3) outscored the Islanders 27-11 in the second half after trailing at halftime 17-15.
Both teams struggled shooting. UTA connected on 31.8 percent of its field goal tries in the first half and made only 35.5 percent in the second half. The Islanders made only 13.6 percent of their shots in the second half.
“This win showed a lot about our kids digging deep and executing late in the game,” UTA coach Krista Gerlich said.
