Texas Wesleyan looking for new head football coach
Texas Wesleyan is looking for a new head football coach.
Brad Sherrod is leaving the Rams to become the head coach at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Texas Wesleyan announced Wednesday.
Sherrod went 17-6 in two seasons, leading the Rams to back-to-back NAIA playoff appearances for the first time in program history.
Texas Wesleyan went 7-5 last season and lost to William Penn (Iowa) 38-9 in the first round. In 2024, the Rams went 10-0 in the regular season, sweeping to the Sooner Athletic Conference title, before losing 42-33 to Benedictine College (Kansas) in the second round of the playoffs after receiving a first-round bye.
Morehouse plays in Division II. The Maroon Tigers went 3-7 last season.
Texas Wesleyan has been upgrading its facilities, opening a new fieldhouse in November, with plans to complete an on-campus football stadium. The Rams have been playing home games at Crowley ISD stadiums.
Sherrod scored his first head coaching job at Texas Wesleyan after nearly three decades as an assistant coach. He was the linebackers coach at UTSA from 2021-23 before taking over the Rams. Sherrod graduated in 1993 from Duke, where he played linebacker.
Texas Wesleyan athletic director Ricky Dotson wished Sherrod well.
“Coach Sherrod brought tremendous energy, experience, and commitment to Texas Wesleyan University,” Dotson said in a statement. “His impact over the past two seasons has been profound, establishing a foundation for future success and inspiring our student-athletes, staff, and fans. We are grateful for his contributions and wish him the very best in his new role at Morehouse College.”
Texas Wesleyan said it will begin a national search for his successor. Offensive coordinator Fran Johnson will serve as interim head coach.
”The ultimate aspiration remains bringing a national championship to Fort Worth,” the university said.
