UTSA head coach says receiving Memphis playbook info had no impact on team’s win
UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor, commenting on the team’s victory against the Memphis Tigers last season, said that starting quarterback Owen McCown receiving playbook information from then Tigers player Tahj Ra-El had no impact on the outcome of the game.
McCown received the information in his Instagram direct messages from Ra-EL, with whom he played high school football together at Meyer Park High School in Charlotte, N.C., and ON3.com published the messages.
The message shared coverage, calls and provided information on a Tigers player, Kourtlan Marsh, who would not play in the game. The Roadrunners topped the Tigers 44-36 in the game, which was played at the Alamodome.
Traylor spoke about the American Conference media day, explaining that McCown never shared any information he received with him and said what he did receive was irrelevant, adding that the situation was being blown out of context.
“The kid he was communicating with was a high school teammate of his, and the kid randomly reached out to him, [McCown] said the stuff that he sent him didn’t make any sense at all, so he didn’t tell me anything about it,” Traylor said, “Owen’s a great kid. He was just being nice to his buddy. It got blown out of context in my opinion.”
Ra-El is no longer playing for the Tigers and has transferred to the Purdue Boilermakers. The program put out a statement saying they had no concerns with the defensive back joining their team, and they see the event as being misconstrued.
