Watch legendary Texas A&M coach R.C. Slocum saw off steer horn before Aggies-Longhorns showdown

Legendary Aggies coach R.C. Slocum sawed off the longhorn of a Texas steer being barbecued on a spit outside of Kyle Field Saturday before the No. 20 Aggies hosted the No. 3 Texas Longhorns.

Slocum was 7-7 all-time against Texas, including four consecutive wins from 1991 to 1994. No Aggies coach beat the Longhorns more than Slocum, who was their head coach from 1989 to 2002.

In the “Aggie War Hymn,” which was written in 1918, the Aggies chant “Saw Varsity’s horns off!” multiple times and A&M students and fans link arms and legs and sway back and forth to mimic a saw blade. Varsity was Texas’ mascot name until it adopted the Texas Longhorn as its official mascot in 1938.

Slocum, who turned 80 a few weeks ago, won a Texas A&M record 123 games.
