Why did Texas QB Maalik Murphy enter the transfer portal before the Longhorns’ CFP semifinal game?
Texas Longhorns quarterback Maalik Murphy won’t be with the team when they play Washington in the college football playoffs on Jan. 1. The California native instead will be looking for his next team in the transfer portal.
Murphy told ESPN he would’ve preferred to finish the season with Texas, but that the timing was too difficult with the need to find the right program to transfer to.
“It’s nothing against Texas at all. I’m doing this purely for me and my future. In my eyes, I’ll always be a Longhorn and a part of this great team,” said Murphy.
A redshirt freshman, Murphy has seen little game time during his Longhorn career only playing significantly in Texas’ victories over BYU and Kansas State when Quinn Ewers was out with injury.
Murphy threw for 477 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions this season.
Murphy’s decision comes after a report by ESPN’s Pete Thamel which stated that current Texas starting quarterback Quinn Ewers was likely to return for his junior season.
Texas also has quarterback Arch Manning who was the most highly sought-after recruit in his class and is thought of as a future superstar by many, though Manning was behind Murphy on the depth chart.
