Fort Worthians will likely not notice that TCU’s Amon. G Carter Stadium will be a “player” in a new Hollywood movie that now has a formal release date.
“My All American”, the story of legendary University of Texas safety Freddie Steinmark and starring Aaron Eckhart as Texas football coach Darrell Royal, is scheduled to hit theaters on Oct. 9. Most of the film was shot all over Texas - including San Antonio’s Alamo Dome, Austin, the Cotton Bowl in Dallas as well as Amon G. Carter Stadium, last year.
Can you imagine how much Charlie Strong and UT director of athletics Steve Patterson are going to play this thing up for recruiting? The Longhorn Network now has programming people may watch.
This should be a good movie, with “Brian’s Song” man-cry potential. Director/writer Angelo Pizzo was the man behind the wildly successful “Hoosiers” and “Rudy”, and he handled the same duties for this movie.
In another in a series of self-indulgent tales to demonstrate just how important I am - I spent two days on set at Amon G. Carter Stadium last June when the movie was being filmed; I chatted with Pizzo, Eckhart and the star of the film, Finn Wittrock. Wow ... just writing those sentences feels pretentious.
Included in the movie are former UT players Jordan Shipley, Case and Colt McCoy. Juston Street plays his dad, James, who was the UT quarterback when Steinmark played.
Steinmark was barely recruited out of high school, but caught the eye of Royal and was offered a scholarship to attend UT. He eventually became the starting safety, and six days after playing in the immortal “Big Shootout” between No. 1 Texas and No. 2 Arkansas in 1969 in Fayetteville, Steinmark entered the hospital.
A bone sarcoma was located in his left leg, which was amputated a few weeks before the Cotton Bowl that season. Steinmark died in June of 1971, and his story of decency and courage have been passed down at UT ever since.
Do NOT believe the credits that say this movie is based on the book written by Jim Dent. It’s really based on the wonderfully underrated book “Horns, Hogs and Nixon” coming written by Terri Frei.
There is no reason this movie should stink.
