UT Arlington baseball splits with Arkansas State

UT Arlington beat Arkansas State 4-3 to salvage a Sun Belt Conference doubleheader on Sunday.

The Red Wolves won the opener 8-0.

Matt McLean set the table for a pair of two-run innings for the Mavericks (5-6, 2-1).

McLean singled to open the game and scored on a two-run home run by Levi Scott.

In the seventh inning McLean singled and scored on a double by Eric Tate. Jackson Morris brought in Tate with a single for a 4-1 lead.

That proved to be the winning run as Arkansas State rallied with two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but came up short.

“As bad as we were the first game, I was proud of our energy level,” coach Darin Thomas said. “We played hard, grinded it out and finally scored a little bit to get their starter out of the game. This was a great series win.”

The Mavericks scored single runs in the second, fourth, fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings to take a 6-4 victory in the opener on Saturday night.
