Fort Worth doctor, at age 75, to play for U.S. in Turkey

Dr. William Wolff of Fort Worth has been selected by the USTA to represent the United States in the 34th International Tennis Federation’s Super-Seniors World Team Championship, which runs Oct. 13-18 in Antalya, Turkey.

Wolff, a former Southwest Conference champion with SMU, who will compete in the 75-and-over Bitsy Grant Cup, one of 10 age-groups featuring men’s and women’s teams for players 60 and over who will represent their countries in competition similar to Davis Cup and Fed Cup competitions. Wolff is one of nine Texans selected for the 40-member U.S. squad.

The United States is the defending champion in the Bitsy Grant Cup and five other categories at the tournament, which will be followed by the World Individual Championships on Oct. 19-26.

Wolff will be joined on the team by captain Fred Farzanegan of Tampa, Fla., Lester Sack of New Orleans, and Robert Quall of Merced, Calif.

In March, the 75-year-old Wolff won the USTA Men’s 75-and-over Indoor National Championship at the Downtown Club at the Met in Houston. He has continued to compete at a high level despite double knee replacement surgery in 2006.

Futures of Mansfield

The $15,000 Futures of Mansfield is scheduled for Oct. 13-19 at Walnut Creek Country Club in Mansfield.

Among the talented young crop of American players on the entry list is 21-year-old Bjorn Fratangelo of Pittsburgh. He won the French Open junior championship in 2011, becoming the first American to win the junior title at Roland Garros since John McEnroe in 1977.

The field will be dotted with current and former collegiate players, including Michigan standout Jason Jung, Georgia Tech product Kevin King, former Southern Cal player Daniel Nguyen and former Texas A&M player Jeff Dadamo.

Among international players entered is Peter Toreko of Germany, at 238 the highest ranked player on the tentative entry list. Yannick Mertens of Belgium is ranked 249, and 20-year-old Liam Broady of Great Britain is 286th.. He has won four Futures titles this year after a junior career that featured doubles titles at Wimbledon and the Australian Open.

Krueger climbing

Aledo’s Mitchell Krueger has been bouncing between Futures events and Challengers over the summer and continues to show improvement.

The 20-year-old third-year pro reached a career high of No. 330 early in the summer, but has slipped to No. 387 after points from his first professional title last year in the Netherlands dropped from his rankings.

Krueger, however, has reached the final of five Futures event this year, including earlier this month in Toronto, where he lost to Fratangelo. Krueger also advanced to the quarterfinals in two other tournaments in Canada.

Krueger, a member of the USTA player development program, arrived Wednesday in Australia, where he will compete in three Futures events, before a week of training, followed by two Challengers.
