Former Midland College pitcher drafted by the Cubs

Former Midland College pitcher Ryan Marton was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 17th round and 517th overall pick of the Major League Baseball amateur draft on Sunday.

The 6-foot-4, 235-pound Marton just finished his junior season with UNLV and is from Toronto, Canada.

He recently transferred to Missouri.

Marton went 7-2 with a 4.01 earned run average and had 61 strikeouts in 58 1/3 innings with the Chaps during his sophomore season in 2025.

Odessa College pitcher Peyton Fiene was selected by the Houston Astros in the 11th round with the 331st overall pick.

Fiene was the 2026 Western Junior College Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year.

Texas Tech had five players taken, highlighted by outfielder Logan Hughes going to the Astros with the 17th overall pick in the first round and outfielder Caden Ferraro to the St. Louis Cardinals in the third round.

Other Red Raiders selected were outfielder Kyeler Thompson by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the ninth round, catcher Matt Quintanar by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 16th round, and third baseman Connor Shouse going to the Seattle Mariners in the 20th round.

Sam Houston State pitcher Ryan Peterson was chosen by the Miami Marlins with a compensation pick in the second round. Peterson is the son of former Stanton football coach John Peterson.
