RockHounds' Ryan Lasko in stable condition after outfield collision
Midland RockHounds center fielder Ryan Lasko was in stable condition on Wednesday after colliding with a teammate during Tuesday night's game in Frisco.
The Athletics, parent organization of the RockHounds, said that Lasko was taken to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Plano on Tuesday night and underwent a spinal decompression and stabilization surgery resulting from a C6-C7 vertebra fracture. The press release said that Dr. Jonathan Poggi performed the surgery.
"I've been in touch with Ryan's mom, Patti, to pass along the organization's support and to let her know that all of us, throughout our system, have them in our thoughts and prayers," said A's General Manager David Forst in a statement. "We are incredibly grateful to Noah Huff and Audy Merrick, our athletic trainers in Midland, for their on-field actions last night, as well as to the Frisco RoughRiders and the paramedics on the scene. We are encouraged by the reports and updates from Dr. Poggi, and we will continue to put all of the resources of our medical staff towards supporting Ryan and his recovery. Ed Sprague, Director of Player Development, will be arriving in Frisco shortly, and our mental health professionals will be available to the Midland players to make sure they receive any help they need."
In the bottom of the third inning of the RoughRiders' 7-6 victory, Lasko and RockHounds right fielder Devin Taylor went after a ball that was hit in the right-center field gap. Both Lasko and Taylor dove for the ball to make the catch but both players collided.
Lasko remained on the ground and did not show much movement. Taylor was able to get back up and stay in the game even though he was a bit shaken up immediately after the collision.
Medical personnel on scene for about 20 minutes, according to RockHounds Director of Broadcasting and Publications Bob Hards. After being stabilized, Lasko was carted off the field and transported to the hospital.
After the game, players from both teams gathered to form a circle in front of home plate. In a RoughRiders' post on X on Tuesday night, it had a photo of the players with their heads down in that circle and the message, "Our hearts are with Ryan Lasko and the RockHounds."
The 24-year-old Lasko is rated as the No. 18 prospect in the A's organization by MLB Pipeline and was a second-round pick by A's out of Rutgers.
The RockHounds and RoughRiders are in the middle of a six-game series at Riders Field through Sunday.
